Stop bashing WalMart

First they bash Wal-Mart with story after story after story…headlines like “the stimulus checks will all go to Wal-Mart” and on and on.

It’s as if they are in their own little world, the media, and they play through imaginary battles time and time again. The end of the first page of the article points out that Wal-Mart is three times larger than the next biggest competitor. That means they could close half of their stores and still be the largest. Right? So in what world is Wal-Mart losing again?

Because PepsiCo decided not to try a new brand with Wal-Mart? Isn’t it possible that their new brand couldn’t match the scale Wal-Mart demands and therefore they had to go with another company?

At some point the media will wake up. No one forces people to work for Wal-Mart. They work there because they want to. Wal-Mart’s work force is packed full of people who can barely speak English, the elderly who just need something to do, the very young just entering the market, and, yes, the few individuals who can’t do anything else. It is a great institution because those who can barely speak English can learn while being paid; they are entered directly into our work force and become integrated in the American dream. If they didn’t think so, they’d move back to their home country.

Then there is the elderly. I’ve seen so many people retired, hang out for a few years travel a little, and eventually get the itch to do something, anything in the work force again. Why? Because they spent 50 years of their lives working and like any habit it is hard to stop. Wal-Mart provides the ability of almost any elderly person to work again. And don’t start saying that they have to work because the world is so cruel…they had 50 years to get their retirement together through Democrat and Republican Presidents and power so it’s their own fault if they aren’t ready to retire.

Wal-Mart is a great start for the young worker. They make you show up on time. They track your progress, they make you be productive. Young people can take these opportunities to build habits that will translate to skills needed in college and any job.

There will always be a portion of society that just can’t cut it. Wal-Mart provides for them as well. There are many entry level positions available.

So by this article you might think I work for Wal-Mart or have relatives who work there or that I’m somehow involved with making Wal-Mart money. No: to each and every assumption with my affiliation with Wal-Mart. Short of owning some stock awhile back (that I sold for a profit) I do not have any affiliation at all. You couldn’t pay me enough to work there. I worked hard, stayed in school, went to college, sacrificed, scrimped, saved and busted butt to carve out a little niche that is my life. For those who didn’t do that, there’s always Wal-Mart.
